Unforgettable six-day fly fishing escape

In May, five adventurous women joined me, for an unforgettable six-day fly fishing escape to the island of Utila, Honduras. This ladies-only trip enjoyed accommodations from Island on the Fly’s lodging, where the hospitality and sunshine were endless.

The group spent their days casting lines across the turquoise flats, targeting the famed “big three;” permit, bonefish, and tarpon. With three expert guides, Halard, Charles, and Pablo, the women explored mangrove-lined channels and crystal-clear shallows with silver flashes of tailing fish.

Each day brought new challenges and rewards. Permit teased with their elusive nature, darting off just as hearts skipped a beat. Bonefish gave everyone their run-for-the-money, literally—blistering runs and quick turns tested reflexes and reels. The juvenile tarpon brought high-flying acrobatics and adrenaline rushes. Some fish were landed, many got away, but every cast carried the thrill of possibility.

The fishing was highlighted on the third day, when Angie H., not only successfully landed her first ever permit – with the guidance of Charles on a wade-only day – but then went on to land a bonefish and a tarpon for the sought after, ‘Grand Slam.’ The group celebrated the momentous achievement back at the lodge, poolside with drinks and pizza.

Evenings were just as special. The lodge offered a beautiful sanctuary—comfortable rooms and a sparkling pool that became a favorite spot to gather, laugh, and reflect after long days in the sun. Cold drinks in hand, the group swapped stories, celebrated firsts, and built friendships and even celebrated Laura M.’s birthday with a cake made locally.

This trip was not just about chasing fish. It was about showing up, being present, and connecting with each other. Whether it was a perfectly placed cast or a missed hookset, each moment contributed to an unforgettable trip. The flats of Utila delivered, the fish kept us honest, and the company made it all magic.
